The Anointing and the Gift

Ok family, let’s talk about some things. One of the things that have been on my heart lately is the topic of the ANOINTING and GIFTINGS. So lets first look at anointing.

So in the Old Testament Priest or Prophets would often take people who were called or chosen by God and they would anoint them with oil allowing the Spirit of the Lord to rest upon them for a season. The word anoints (maw-shakh’in Hebrew) means to smear or to paint. Often they would take an entire rams horn of oil pouring the full contents allowing it to drip from the head running all the way to the feet. This anointing literally broke off the bonds of the flesh, empowering you to fulfill God call.

It’s the ANOINTING that breaks the yoke of the enemy. Isaiah 10:27

This process was very important. In this place of submission, you were allowing the Holy Spirit to wear you. Yes, I said that correctly. Holy Spirit would wear you much like when you put on a glove. From Aaron, Gideon, Samuel, Saul, David and many more they were all anointed, smeared, painted, with the very presence of God. This anointing added with the Holy Spirit turned your gifting into an amazing weapon for the Kingdom.

For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn. Romans 11:29

Now let us look at Giftings. As the scripture in Romans says, the gifts and call can never be withdrawn. While you were being knitted together in your mother’s womb God was placing inside of you gifts and callings. This is called your created purpose. These gifts and callings are there to give God glory and also they are there for your joy. There is nothing more amazing then when you find your calling in life.

Now there are a select group of giftings called the Gifts of the Spirit or also known as the Graces of the Spirit. These are the gifts I will be focusing on. Every Spirit-filled Believer has access to every one of the Gifts. Nine Gifts are mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12:8 but I do believe there are more that could be mentioned in Old Testament scripture. I will focus on these. So here they are.

Word of Wisdom
Word of Knowledge
Gift of Faith
Gift of Healing
Working of Miracles
Gift of Prophecy
Discerning of Spirits
Gift of Tongues
Interpretation of Tongues

Just be clear Paul never emphasizes that you can have only one but He suggest that we can excel in every gift.

So let us go a little deeper. Here is my concern. With all the schools of Supernatural and ministries teaching on the gifts (Though I see churches and ministries that have done incredible Jobs) we have in some way imparted giftings apart from the need of the anointing. Heres what I mean. There is a big difference between being baptized with the Holy Spirit and being Filled with the Holy Spirit. For some people, they have literally been fill only on their baptism but never again.

Listen, friends, Holy Spirit is not an optional voice. I think I have ignorantly believed that the church was maturer then they actually are. Holy Spirit is part of the three persons of the Godhead. God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit. Holy Spirit is the manifest presence of God that created everything you see, including the forming of Christ in Mary’s womb. HE’S not just a voice…He is the voice.

There is a fullness that only comes through ABIDING in communion with the Holy Spirit. This fullness is where the anointing is. This place of raw obedience and communion is where the marriage begins. I see people all the time who get filled and run to the streets to see healings and miracles but they never come back to the secret place. In the beginning, there is a small grace for that but eventually, you will stop operating under the anointing and you will function solely off of your gifting.

1st Samuel sheds some light to this. In Chapter 10 we come to the story of a young Saul searching for His father’s donkeys. Israel in their distress of being under siege from the Philistines cry out to God for a king and God grants their wish and tells Samuel to anoint Saul and the Spirit of the Lord rest on Saul and gives him a new heart. In the chapter we see Samuel pour a flask of oil over Sauls’ head and anoint him king of Israel. On Sauls way home he runs into a group of Prophets prophesying and Sauls gifting along with the anointing causes him to fall to the ground prophesying. It was said by the people who saw this “Is Saul not also a Prophet.” So here we see Saul prophesying under the gift and the anointing.

Later we see through many acts of disobedience 1 Samuel 16:14 says that the Spirit of the Lord departed Saul and a distressing spirit entered him. So in this moment Saul is no longer anointed by God and it has been transferred to David. This is where obedience becomes so important. Know I know people will point out that I am reading from the Old Testament. But remember that Paul in Ephesians 4:30 not to grieve the Holy Spirit, and 1 Thessalonians 5:19 tells us to not quench Him.

Grace my friends is a beautiful thing. But grace is poured out through humility and repentance. I want to tell you that Holy Spirit will never leave you but your disobedience can make you lose your awareness of His presence.

Let’s look at the last part of Sauls story. Saul is now pursuing Gods anointed King David. While trying to capture David, Saul runs into a group of Prophets prophesying on the road and when Saul encounters them he falls to the ground prophesying. The Spirit of God had come on Him but not in Him. Sauls’ heart was no longer Gods. This lead Saul to prophecy out of a perverted gift many time later believing that God had given David to Saul to kill.

My Friends, moving out of a gifting without the anointing “Presence” is a deadly thing. You will find yourself moving from a perspective of the person’s heart, not from an anointing. When a gifting moves in unison with an anointing, its more than a word, its the POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION. Seek the closet, my friends. The anointing is worth everything. I love the person of the Holy Spirit. He is the audible beat of God’s heart towards you. Do not let a gifting leave you glorying in yourself. Obey the voice, the very voice of God the Spirit! Only Believe!!!

There is no fire in hell that can touch you if you Jesus Christ is your Lord. He will cloth you in righteousness and not one hair head will be burned. No matter the difficulty of your circumstance, rather it be like the 3 Hebrews who found themselves thrown into a fiery furnace, or Paul chained in prison. One thing they had in common is this, they rejoiced in all things, I say again rejoice.

When told to worship Nebuchadnezzar’s image or thrown into the furnace the three Hebrews refused. Their response was, “Oh Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. “If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand. O, king. “But if not, LET IT BE KNOWN to you, O king, We do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the golden image which you set up.”

I love their response! “Our God will deliver us”, “But if not, let it be known!”

Paul had a similar story. Paul was was accustomed to prison. One night when Paul and Silas was cast into prison, in the midnight hour, in their chains they began to sing and worship and a earthquake shook the prison and the doors opened and their chains fell off. It doesn’t say that they began to worship God in hopes of freedom. They were not using praise in order to get God to move. The interesting thing about the story is even when the chains were broken they did not run. Instead they used every opportunity this miracle offered to bring God glory by leading the guard and his family to Jesus.

See my friends, Paul and Silas were not using praise and worship to manipulate God into doing something. Instead they worshipped God because He was still good even though they were in chains. We are so often using praise and worship as a weapon of warfare instead of a repositioning of our Lordship through enthroning Him within our hearts.

This is exactly what the three Hebrews were doing. What they were saying is, “God will deliver us, but if He doesn’t, it still doesn’t change the fact that he is still God!” So often I meet Christians who the moment their miracle doesn’t manifest their opinion on God’s goodness changes proving the point that the sought God only for their needs, not for relationship. Because of the Hebrews unwavering hearts about God’s goodness, they enthroned Him King over their hearts through praise. Because of this rock of faith they stood upon, Jesus himself comes to deliver them from their circumstances.

I will finish with this. Paul had another trial while being imprisoned in Rome. He looked at his circumstances quit differently then most believers. In the middle of his prison while be chained, Paul remained in more freedom then most of the people I know. He saw that even in his chains the gospel could be furthered. He rejoiced in the Lord. He made Jesus King over his circumstances. He saw that his physical limitations through being chained in prison did not have right to the condition of his heart. He didn’t spend his time blaming God. Instead he penned letters encouraging the churches to remain steadfast in the faith of Jesus.

Now I have to write this last part so that liberty is not given to ones who would allow the enemy to remove them from all the blessings we have through Christ. I am in no way saying that your sickness in any way is sent by God so that people might see your long suffers as worship unto him. That is a doctrine of demons. God is not the author of sickness but faith. I am saying that in spite of your healing, your deliverance, your provision, that you praise and worship the Father because he is good and worthy of all praise. Make Jesus Lord over your emotions and heart and watch what God will do. Your very miracle might be hindered because of the posture of your heart. John says that Christ withdrew Himself from man in Israel because he knew they intent of their heart. They didn’t want him as King, they wanted Him for his blessings.
